Literacy to Learn: Professional Development for 21st Century Educators is composed of online modules supported by video documentaries of best practices in the classroom. Courses can be taken at three different levels:
Level One – Discovery (see courses and hours below) requires a locally assigned evaluator to approve work before the participant can receive an eCertificate;
Level Two (Optional) – Application (or Project Development) for an additional contact hour – requires a locally assigned mentor for project approval and follow-up support;
Level Three (Optional) – Teaching (or Project Implementation and Evaluation) for an additional 2 contact hours – requires a locally assigned mentor for project approval and follow-up support.
A course taken through all three levels would serve well as a document of accomplishment for National Board Certification portfolios.

About the Literacy to Learn (L2L) Development Team:
Dr. Cris Crissman, Program Developer and Course Developer for Elementary, Middle/High School: Reading, Writing, and Thinking Across the Curriculum, is a Special Projects Consultant with Distance Learning at the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction; an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Curriculum and Instruction Department at North Carolina State University; and a writer and media producer. Her teaching experience is in literacy education. The North Carolina Reading Association honored her as “Reading Educator of the Year” in 1998. Her current interests focus on developing and implementing distance learning or "connected learning" projects that engage students in problem-based learning and provide professional development opportunities for educators. The Connected Learning Project received an ISTE 2007 SIGtel Online Learning Award. She also produces the popular USDLC series, Books, Books, Books.
David Warlick, Web Developer, The Landmark Project, has been programming computers since he introduced them into his social studies classroom in1982. Since then he has created some of the most popular education web tools on the Internet, attracting almost a million visitors to his web site a day. David is also the author of three books on instructional technology and 21st century literacy, and has spoken to audiences about modernizing classrooms throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, Asia, and South America.
Danielle Brush, Course Developer for Digital and Scientific Literacy, is an Instructional Technologist for the Office for Partnerships, Professional Development, and Technology at Western Illinois University at Macomb. She works with teachers to create student-centered classrooms that implement the 21st century skills as well as foster the use of technology. She provides workshops for teachers along with serving as a technology integration specialist for area school districts. Danielle is an Illinois certified teacher and holds a Master’s Degree in Instructional Design and Technology. She has presented locally and nationally on a variety of integration and technology-related topics.
Bill Lovin, Videographer, Marine Grafics, specializes in Underwater, Natural Science, and Environmental Media Production. He has filmed in over fifty countries around the world producing programs for broadcast, non-profit, and educational markets. Also, a technology visionary, he was honored by The Tech Museum of Innovation in 2002 as an Intel Environmental Award Tech Laureate for his creation of EstuaryLIVE, a live, interactive, Internet field trip.
